What is HSK 3.0?

The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK), or the Chinese Proficiency Test, is a standardized test that assesses and certifies the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers. Recently, the HSK has undergone significant updates, bringing in a new structure that promises to be more comprehensive and accurate in evaluating a learner's Chinese language skills. If you're preparing for the HSK or planning to start your Chinese learning journey, here's everything you need to know about the new HSK.

Why create the new HSK instead of continuing the old one?

  • The New HSK (HSK 3.0) is designed to align more closely with international language proficiency standards, such as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR is widely used in Europe and beyond to standardize language proficiency levels across different languages. Here's how the new HSK aims to meet these standards:

Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

Structure and Levels:

The CEFR has six proficiency levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2.

The New HSK introduces nine levels, which provide a more granular alignment with the CEFR levels. Here's a rough comparison:

  • Beginner (HSK Levels 1-3): Corresponds to CEFR A1 and A2.

  • Intermediate (HSK Levels 4-6): Corresponds to CEFR B1 and B2.

  • Advanced (HSK Levels 7-9): Corresponds to CEFR C1 and C2.

Vocabulary and Grammar:

  • The CEFR outlines specific vocabulary and grammar competencies required at each level. The New HSK expands its vocabulary and grammar requirements to align with these competencies.

  • By defining clear vocabulary and grammar points for each HSK level, the New HSK ensures that learners have the necessary language tools to meet CEFR standards.

Skills Assessed:

  • CEFR: Tests listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

  • New HSK: Assesses all four skills, plus translation at advanced levels, for a comprehensive evaluation.

Holistic Language Use:

  • CEFR: Focuses on practical, real-world language use.

  • New HSK: Emphasizes practical skills for everyday and professional communication.

Clear Progression Path:

  • CEFR: Provides a clear path for tracking progress and setting goals.

  • New HSK: Offers nine levels for a detailed progression, helping learners see their improvement and set learning targets.
